Plumbers
How to contact a plumber in Denmark
Plumber is VVS (vand, varme, sanitet: water, heating, sanitation). A firm on the Danish VVS list is contacted in Danish. If the call is hard to follow, ask to continue by text.
The word that matters
| Danish | In this context |
|---|---|
| VVS | plumbing, heating and sanitation |
| autoriseret VVS-installatør | authorised plumbing contractor |
| faste installationer | fixed pipework, not a loose appliance |
| lækage | a leak |
| rør | pipes |
| vagt | call-out, often evening or weekend |
| faktura | invoice |
| stigrør | the shared riser in an apartment building |
Work on fixed water and heating installations has to be done by an autoriseret VVS-installatør, or by a firm that brings one onto the job. Ask which of those two it is, and ask for it on the invoice. You can look up authorisations at Sikkerhedsstyrelsen (sik.dk). A dripping joint and a burst pipe hidden in a wall are different jobs. Say which one you have.
An evening or weekend visit is a vagt and costs more than a daytime hour. Ask er tilkaldegebyret inklusiv? (is the call-out fee included?).
A message you can send
That names the address, says whether it is a sink, a toilet or a hidden pipe, and asks an authorised plumber to reply in writing with a time and a price.
Water damage and a rented flat
If water is spreading, tell the landlord or the building association the same day. Shut the stopcock if you know where it is (stoppehanen). Call your insurer before a large repair if the policy wants a report first. See insurance and damage and rental repairs.
